A Lennox capacitor replacement in Las Vegas typically costs $150 – $325 installed, depending on whether it’s a single or dual-run capacitor and which Lennox model you have. We stock common Lennox-compatible capacitors on our trucks, so most replacements happen the same day we diagnose the problem.

Here’s how most homeowners discover they need one: the AC is running but the air coming out of the vents is warm, or the outside unit hums but the fan won’t spin. Sometimes the unit just won’t start at all. Nine times out of ten in Las Vegas, when a Lennox condenser is humming and not starting, the capacitor is the culprit. The heat here kills capacitors faster than anywhere else in the country.
Which Lennox Models This Applies To
Every Lennox residential AC and heat pump uses at least one capacitor. The XC, XP, EL, ML, and Merit series all have them. If you have a Lennox 14ACX, XC13, XC14, XC16, XC20, XC21, XP14, XP16, XP20, XC25, EL16XC1, EL18XCV, ML14XC1, or similar, your unit has at least one run capacitor. Most newer Lennox units have a dual-run capacitor, meaning one cylinder-shaped component does double duty: it starts the compressor and the condenser fan motor at the same time.
Here’s a compatibility gotcha that trips up a lot of Las Vegas homeowners: the capacitor’s rating is not determined by the model number alone. You need to read the microfarad (µF) rating printed on the side of the existing capacitor. A Lennox XC14 might call for a 45/5 µF dual capacitor, while an XC16 of the same tonnage may need a 50/7.5. Guessing wrong produces a compressor that runs hot and fails early. That’s why we read the label off the old part before we quote anything.
OEM capacitors sold under the Lennox name are solid parts, but the honest truth is that most of them are made by the same manufacturers (AmRad, Titan HD, and a few others) that sell to the aftermarket. We stock both OEM Lennox capacitors and quality aftermarket equivalents. The aftermarket versions often carry a better or equal spec and cost less. We’ll show you both options and let you decide. Just know that whatever we install, the warranty covers it.

Signs Your Lennox Capacitor Replacement Is Failing
- Outside unit hums but the fan doesn’t spin. The capacitor’s start winding can’t generate enough torque to kick the fan motor over. This is the most common symptom we see on Lennox units in Summerlin and across Las Vegas.
- AC blows warm air while the condenser fan runs. The compressor side of a dual-run capacitor can fail independently. The fan keeps spinning, so everything looks normal from outside, but the compressor never starts. This is a classic split-failure on dual capacitors.
- Unit struggles to start, then runs. A capacitor that’s lost 10 – 15% of its rated microfarads will start the compressor weakly. Over time this damages the compressor windings. If your Lennox unit sounds like it’s coughing before it catches, the capacitor is likely fading.
- Visible swelling or oil leaking from the capacitor body. The metal top of the capacitor should be flat. If it’s bulging or you see a film of oil around the seam, the capacitor has overheated internally and is done. No testing required.
- Unit ran fine a week ago, now nothing at all. Capacitors in Southern Nevada often fail suddenly, not gradually. The extreme ambient heat plus a hot condenser compartment pushes them past their limit overnight.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
In Las Vegas, you should expect to pay $150 – $325 for a Lennox capacitor replacement, parts and labor included. Here’s what drives the spread:
- Single-run capacitor (fan only or compressor only): $150 – $225. Less common on newer Lennox units, but still out there on older systems.
- Dual-run capacitor (fan + compressor in one): $175 – $325. The standard on most Lennox units made in the last 15 years.
- Hard-start kit: +$75 – $125. If your Lennox compressor is aging and struggling, we may recommend adding a start capacitor. This is a separate component that gives the compressor an extra jolt on startup. We never add it unless the existing capacitor has already failed and the compressor is showing signs of strain.
Every capacitor we replace includes a written price before any work starts. No surprises. The repair is covered under our 365-Day Done Right Promise: if the capacitor fails within a year, we come back and replace it at no charge, no argument. We also test the old capacitor in front of you, reading the microfarads off our meter against the rating printed on the label, so you know exactly why we’re recommending the replacement.
DIY or Call Us?
We’ll be straight with you: a capacitor can hold a charge even after the power is off, and it can knock you on your back if you touch the terminals. If you know that and you know how to safely discharge it, replacing a capacitor is a 20-minute job with a $30 – $60 part from a supply house.
But most Las Vegas homeowners don’t have a multimeter or the experience to discharge a stored charge safely, and that’s fine. Here’s what you can check on your own: look at the capacitor through the grille. If the top is bulged or there’s oil staining around it, you’ve found the problem. Don’t touch it. Call us. If you’re not sure, call us anyway and we’ll test it. Devin Marlowe has said it more times than he can count: “Tell me what it is doing, I will tell you what it needs – no guessing, no padding the invoice.” That applies here.
FAQs
In Las Vegas, a capacitor typically lasts 5 to 10 years, but we’ve seen them fail in as little as 3 years on units that run hard through our 110°F summers. The extreme heat shortens the lifespan compared to milder climates.
No. Capacitors are sealed components. Once the internal dielectric breaks down or the casing swells, there’s no repairing it. Replacement is the only fix, and it’s one of the least expensive AC repairs you’ll ever pay for.
Most capacitor replacements take 30 to 60 minutes from diagnosis to done. If you call us in the morning, we can usually have your Lennox unit running again the same day we come out.
Yes. We stock common Lennox dual-run and single-run capacitor values (5 µF, 7.5 µF, 10 µF, 35/5, 40/5, 45/5, 50/7.5, 55/5, and more) along with compatible replacements for Carrier and Trane units. If yours is an uncommon spec, we can usually get it from a Las Vegas supply house the same afternoon.
If your Lennox unit is humming, warm, or dead, call (725) 502-1353 for a free replacement estimate. A live person answers 24/7, and the tech we send will arrive in uniform with a photo ID badge you’ve already seen by text before we knock.
