Goodman Capacitor Replacement: The Las Vegas Owner’s Guide

We replace Goodman capacitors in Las Vegas homes every week, and the installed price typically runs $150 to $350 depending on whether it’s a single or dual capacitor and how fast we can reach you. Most jobs are done same-day because we stock the common Goodman capacitor ratings on our trucks. You’ll usually discover the problem when your outside unit hums but the fan won’t spin, or the compressor clicks and gives up after a few seconds. That hum is the capacitor failing to give the motor its starting jolt, and every day you run the unit like that, you’re asking the motor to do a job it can’t do without help.

We’re an independent service provider, not affiliated with Goodman, but we’ve been matching their capacitors across Las Vegas for years, from Summerlin ranch homes to Henderson track builds.

Which Goodman Models This Applies To

Goodman has used three capacitor families across their residential lines, and the one your unit needs depends on the age and model. The GSC, GSX, GSZ, and SSZ series condensing units from the last 15 years mostly run dual-run capacitors rated from 35/5 MFD to 80/10 MFD at 370 or 440 VAC. Older units, including the CK and CKL series, often use separate start and run capacitors, which changes the diagnosis and the part cost.

The compatibility gotcha we see most in Las Vegas: a Goodman unit built for a 370-volt capacitor can be swapped to a 440-volt equivalent safely, but never the other way. Running a 370-volt capacitor where the unit calls for 440 volts shortens its life fast, especially when your condenser sits on a west-facing slab in July. Heat is the number one capacitor killer in this climate. We match the capacitor by reading the label on the old part, not by guessing from the model number alone, because production runs changed suppliers and specs without changing model numbers. For the replacement itself, we’ll install an OEM Goodman capacitor if you want exact spec match, or a quality aftermarket equivalent like Titan HD or AmRad. The aftermarket units often carry the same or better temperature ratings and cost less, and we’ll tell you that plainly before you choose.

Signs Your Goodman Capacitor Replacement Is Failing

  • The outside unit hums but the fan doesn’t turn. The capacitor has lost enough microfarads that it can’t provide the starting torque. You might see the fan blades twitch or try to move and stop. If you catch it here, the capacitor is usually the only part that needs replacing.
  • The compressor clicks on and off rapidly. That’s the compressor trying to start, failing, and tripping its thermal overload. Left unchecked, this repeated failed start cooks the compressor windings, and suddenly a $200 capacitor job becomes a $4,000 compressor replacement.
  • The air conditioner runs but blows warm air. The fan motor may be running off the run winding while the compressor never actually started. The unit sounds like it’s working, but nothing is moving heat. A quick check of the capacitor with a multimeter confirms it’s out of spec, often below 70% of its rated MFD.
  • The capacitor itself is swollen, leaking, or smells burnt. In Las Vegas heat, capacitor cases bulge like a soda can left in a car. The dielectric oil inside breaks down and expands. Once you see the dome shape on top, the part is done.
  • The breaker trips when the AC kicks on. A dead capacitor can force the compressor to pull locked-rotor amps, which spikes the circuit. It won’t always trip the breaker, but when it does, the capacitor is one of the first things we test. Don’t keep resetting the breaker and trying again; that repeated spike is what kills compressors.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

In Las Vegas, expect to pay $150 to $350 for a Goodman capacitor replacement, parts and labor included. A single run capacitor on the lower end of that range covers most blower motor and condenser fan situations. A dual-run capacitor, which handles the compressor and fan together, lands higher because the part itself costs more. If your unit needs both a start capacitor and a run capacitor, you’re looking at the top of the range.

What you get for that price: we show up with the right capacitor for your Goodman model, test the old one so you can see the reading, install the replacement, verify the motor amp draw is within spec, and hand you a written price before any work starts, always. The repair is covered by our 365-Day Done Right Promise. If the capacitor fails within that year, we return and replace it at no charge, no argument. You’ll know the exact total before we turn a screw.

DIY or Call Us?

Here’s the honest split, from Devin Marlowe and the crew. The capacitor is not a part we recommend you replace yourself. Even with the breaker off, a capacitor holds a charge at 220 to 440 volts, enough to knock you on your back if you touch the terminals wrong. You can safely check the outside unit visually: is the fan spinning, is the capacitor cap bulging, do you hear the hum? But opening the service panel and discharging the capacitor is not a beginner’s job.

If you’re handy and determined, you could discharge it with an insulated screwdriver after killing all power and test it with a multimeter. But the moment you’re unsure which capacitor your Goodman model needs or whether the fan motor is also on its way out, call us at (725) 502-1353. We would rather spend 20 minutes diagnosing it correctly than have you spend $60 on the wrong part and still be without AC tonight.
