Rheem Heat Pump Service: The Las Vegas Owner’s Guide

Rheem heat pump repair in Las Vegas typically runs $150 – $650 installed, depending on whether it’s a capacitor, contactor, defrost control board, or refrigerant leak. We keep the most common Rheem-specific parts stocked on our trucks, so most calls are a single-visit fix with a written price before any work starts. You’ll usually know something’s wrong when the outdoor unit hums but won’t start, or the indoor air blows lukewarm on a 105-degree afternoon in Summerlin.

The failure pattern in Las Vegas is predictable: our heat pumps run nearly year-round, and the capacitor and contactor give out before anything else. The capacitor is what starts the compressor and fan motor – think of it as the starter on a car. The contactor is the switch that sends 24 volts to the outdoor unit. When either one fails, the system either won’t turn on or tries to start and trips. In neighborhoods like Henderson and Centennial Hills, we see these failures most often in July and August, when the system has been cycling nonstop for weeks.

Which Rheem Models This Applies To

The parts we’re talking about here apply to the vast majority of Rheem residential heat pumps built in the last 15 to 20 years. That includes the RP14, RP15, RP16, and RP17 series, the Prestige line, and older 10-SEER and 12-SEER units still running in older Las Vegas neighborhoods like Paradise and Sunrise Manor. The compatibility gotcha with Rheem is the control board: boards from the RP14 and RP16 series look nearly identical but are not interchangeable. We match the exact board part number on the unit’s data plate, not just the series name.

For OEM versus aftermarket, our general guidance for Rheem homeowners: the capacitor and contactor are fine to replace with high-quality aftermarket equivalents from brands like Amrad or Mars, which often outlast the original Rheem part. Control boards, defrost sensors, and reversing valves are a different story. Those we replace with OEM Rheem parts because the voltage tolerances and communication protocols are tighter. If someone tries to sell you a universal control board for a Rheem heat pump, be skeptical – we’ve fixed a fair number of those after they failed within a season.

Brandt HVAC Co Las Vegas is an independent service provider. We’re not affiliated with Rheem, but we stock Rheem-compatible parts and service all major residential heat pump brands, including Carrier, Trane, and Lennox.

Signs Your Rheem Heat Pump Service Is Failing

  • Outdoor unit hums but the fan doesn’t spin. This is a failed capacitor or a seized fan motor. The compressor is calling for power, but the motor can’t get the start it needs. The longer it sits like this, the more stress on the compressor.
  • System runs but blows room-temperature air. If the outdoor unit is running and the air isn’t cold, you’re likely low on refrigerant or the reversing valve is stuck mid-position. In Las Vegas, a system low on charge from a slow leak will lose cooling capacity gradually over a season, not all at once.
  • Breaker trips when the heat pump kicks on. This points to a shorted compressor or a failing capacitor pulling excessive amps. Don’t keep resetting the breaker – each attempt risks further damage.
  • Unit short-cycles – turns on, runs a minute, shuts off. Short-cycling in a Rheem heat pump is often a bad defrost control board or a refrigerant overcharge from a previous repair. It kills compressors faster than almost anything else we see in Las Vegas.
  • Frost or ice on the outdoor coil in cooling season. That’s a defrost cycle failure, a refrigerant restriction, or low charge. In Las Vegas, frost on a coil in July is never normal and means the system is working against itself.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Here’s what Rheem heat pump repairs actually cost in the Las Vegas market, installed, with parts and labor included:

  • Capacitor replacement: $150 – $250
  • Contactor replacement: $150 – $250
  • Defrost control board: $300 – $500
  • Reversing valve: $500 – $650
  • Refrigerant leak repair and recharge: $400 – $650, depending on leak location and charge amount

What drives the range is access (some Rheem units in Las Vegas are installed on rooftops, others on narrow side yards), the specific part number, and whether the system needs refrigerant work. Every quote is written before any work starts – you see the number, you approve it, then we turn a wrench. Every repair includes a written guarantee, and under our 365-Day Done Right Promise, if the same repair fails within a year, we return and make it right at no charge. No arguments, no re-diagnosis fee, no fine print.

DIY or Call Us?

There’s a real safety line here, and we’ll name it plainly. The capacitor stores voltage even after power is disconnected, and it can discharge enough to hurt you badly if you don’t discharge it correctly. The contactor, reversing valve, and defrost board all involve line-voltage and 24-volt wiring inside the panel. If you’re not trained to work inside an electrical panel with a multimeter, this is not the job to learn on. We don’t give out step-by-step instructions for inside-the-panel work because we’ve seen what happens when it goes wrong.

What you can safely do: check the thermostat settings, make sure the breakers are in the on position, and check if the outdoor unit has visible ice or a blanket of dust on the coil. Those three checks tell us a lot. If the system still isn’t cooling, call (725) 502-1353. Tell us what it’s doing – humming, short-cycling, not turning on at all – and we’ll show up with the likely part already on the truck.
